BJJ Mat Etiquette
Prime Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu mat etiquette
Welcome to Prime BJJ Academy, where Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is our passion and safety is our priority. To ensure a respectful and harmonious training environment, we kindly ask all students to adhere to our etiquette rules. Let's train hard, learn, and grow together at Prime BJJ Academy.
Show up on time for class and do not skip warm ups.
- If you are sick or have a skin infection, please stay home to keep everyone safe and healthy.
- If you arrive late, bow onto the mat and shake hands with the professor and any instructors as soon as you step on the mat.
Personal Hygiene - Keep Yourself and Your Gi Clean
- Wearing a Gi is mandatory. On No Gi day, wear Prime BJJ shirt, Prime BJJ rash guard, gi pants, or Prime BJJ shorts.
- It is essential to maintain cleanliness when stepping on the mat. Please arrive to class showered with trimmed finger and toenails.
- If possible, brush your teeth before each class or use mouthwash/gum.
- Undergarments are required.
- All jewelry and eyeglasses must be removed.
- Cover all wounds and fresh tattoos throughout training; if not possible, refrain from training until healed.
No Shoes on the Mat
Always Respect everyone on the mat
- Let the higher-belt request you as a training partner; the color of one’s belt and stripes reflects dedication to BJJ. Regardless of rank, respect for each other is expected throughout our Academy.
- Prior to rolling, partners follow the tradition of hand slapping and fist bumping. Ensure space awareness when rolling and give way when higher belts are in close proximity.
- We have diverse training dynamics, including partners like life partners, spouses, and teen children. Safety is our priority, so be mindful of differences in age, gender, and size. Matching partner intensity enhances the benefits of each roll.
- Respectful language is a must when communicating with other students, with strict adherence to our zero-tolerance policy against violence and inappropriate behavior. Remember, the main goal at our Academy is to learn and practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Keep talking to a minimum during instructions
- During instructor demonstrations, maintain absolute silence.
- Save comments or jokes for the end of class.
- Our goal is for you to focus solely on learning, training, and improving in jiu-jitsu during the time you spend on the mat.
Stick to the techniques that the coach has shown
- Going off-script during technique practice or coaching others during drills is considered a BJJ etiquette violation.
- Respect the instructor/coach's role and guidance during practice sessions.
Respect the Tap and be humble in Victory
- Train Hard and Win Easy during competitions
We want to hear from you after the class is over
- Our goal is to provide you with authentic Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, straight from the source in Brazil, while prioritizing your safety on the mats. For any inquiries about training, progress, memberships, competitions, or other concerns, feel free to reach out to us anytime at info@primebjj.com.
